Movie Review: "Belle Le Grand"
by Easan Katir
Last night while burning the midnight pixels testing some buy/sell ideas, this Western appeared on the Encore channel. It's a rollicking story of trading mining shares at the San Francisco exchange during the 1800s, including deception, delayed news feeds, short squeezes, strong women, near bankrupts making a comeback, the perils of buying paper at a premium to par, panics, campaigns -- all the joys and sorrows of the spec world.
One would never guess all this from the anemic online reviews. I'd classify it right up there with "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" as lessons for a lifetime.
Movie buffs will also enjoy early sightings of James Arness, Harry Morgan, "Alfalfa" Switzer, and an over-the-top performance by Hope Emerson.
