The Link between Emotion and Technique, by
Nigel Davies
One aspect of chess that I think is often overlooked is the link between emotion and technique. I believe that many mistakes that are explained in terms of knowledge are in fact rooted in emotions. Typical of this is the missed opportunity, for example if a player has a great position which becomes slightly less promising. At such moments players can try to recoup the point they had mentally banked by playing with undue aggression. But in so doing their position can slip even more, and suddenly they end up with a loss. Is there a cure? Yes, but it hurts in that we have to face the fact that the origins of our errors usually lie in some character trait that we would prefer not to admit to ourselves. The serial offenders usually find some other excuse.
