Triple Crown Thoughts, from Rocky Humbert
June 8, 2012 |
"I'll Have Another" was just scratched due to a tendon injury. So no Triple Crown this year.
This leaves the field looking strange — with 8 out of the 12 entries showing a line over 10-1. I'll have another was the favorite at 4-5; the next closest was Dullahan at 5-1. "Alpha" (supposedly the biggest threat to I'll have another) was scratched a couple of days ago.
I can't resist the pun: This race has no Alpha.

next time that would be beta left alone.
Funny how the day after “I’ll Have Another” had to report to the NYRA supervised Detention Barn he comes up lame.
A bowed tendon isn’t such a big deal for a pleasure horse but it would be pretty crazy to race a horse again after. I had a horse do that after pulling her up too quick on a downslope. She healed up after six months of treatments and seemed fine. She bowed it again a few years later.
The money was interesting for the Belmont as Union Rags was the only horse that had more than half the money bet to win. Dullahan might have had more money bet on him but much more was bet on the place and show. You really want people that like a horse to be betting to win. The other races were fun to watch races but betters seemed to have no clue who would win. All day saw nearly all the horses with more than half the money bet on place and show. Great for watching those as anything can happen.
