Event History and Survival Analysis by Paul Allison is an excellent book showing you how to deal with events like death, unemployment, recidivism from jail, and stock market declines. It covers regression methods and multiple outcomes. Highly accessible.

Slightly off-topic but I’m offering advance copies of a book that overlaps themes from Trader Vic (I still refer back to the copy I bought 23 years ago at Hatchards Piccadilly) and commentary from this blog. The book is titled Economics for Independent Thinkers. It draws on the Austrian school, Schumpeter, Minsky, and a variety of classical economists. You can find a description, including sample chapters, at If it sounds interesting and like something you might like to comment on (good or bad), please reply back and I’d be happy to send an advance copy.

Paul Allison’s small book on Missing Data (2002) is also worthwhile.
